Estrella de los Rios
No Deliveries

Estrella de los Rios.  Estrella’s motto is “Come y Calla” (shut up & eat) and she is intimidatingly serious about it. Estrella is a unique little restaurant in La Macarena, but you better reserve at least 24 hours in advance.

Seinfeld’s Soup Nazi has nothing on owner/chef of the self named restaurant – Estrella de los Rios.  Estrella’s motto is “Come y Calla” and she is intimidatingly serious about it.   Estrella has is a unique little restaurant in La Macarena open only for those who reserve 24 hours in advance.  She accepts reservations for 2 - 12 people, and she will prepare you a feast of six to seven courses.    Don’t bother asking what you are eating though – remember the motto – “Eat up and Shut up.”

I recently rounded up the XCC (Ex- Caracas Crowd) and called Estrella for a reservation.  The dining adventure begins with the call as she abrasively asks about the dining habits of the party:  “Any Muslims?  Vegetarians?  Fruitarians?  Allergies?”  Be sure to do your homework before calling as Estrella is not the most patient of women and she will not tolerate any ums, errs, or no ses.  I surrendered to the interrogation and informed on the particularities of my friends:  “one has allergies to shellfish and a dislike of red meat, one has an aversion to chicken, and one feels rice should not be considered food.”

After dishing out the abuse, Estrella began dishing out the seven course meal.  She began with a fresh shellfish ceviche (just fish for the allergic one) accompanied by warm tostones and 3 delicious sauces – the cilantro one being especially divine.   Estrella was now on a roll.  Course after course was prepared and presented in quick success – light fish and parsley soup, bean empanadas, fish milanesa, fruit platter w/melon and pomelo, then finally the main course of steamed sesame seed encrusted robalo with sun dried tomato pasta and fried rice with pork.  Although this was followed by one of my favorite deserts, maracuya ice-cream with mora sauce, I was so completely full I simply could not enjoy it.

Estrella is a great cook and the menu she presented was intriguing, as I am sure it would be every time.  I like the concept of the restaurant, I like that we had the entire place to ourselves, and if I was a big eater, I would most likely return as the food was so plentiful.  However, I found her eccentric, rude, and abrasive manner a little too much to swallow, especially at the price of P80,000.00 per person.
