Balzac
No Deliveries

At Balzac they serve appetizers, but don't let that fool you because they serve a substantial mound of wonderfulness. So you can share, or opt to have the plate all for yourself.

Balzac = Funny Name – Great Restaurant.  I feel like a 12 year old anytime someone mentions Balzac and all I can think of is, well, Balzac’s.

However, there are two other words you need to remember when you go to Balzac:  Steak Tartar.   Unbelievable.  I am a huge fan of raw beef and have never tasted it as fine as they do it at Balzac.  At Balzac (I just can’t stop saying the word) they serve it as an appetizer.  Still, it is a substantial mound of wonderfulness so there is enough to share, or you can opt (as I will next time) to have it all to yourself as a main course.

I did not go to Balzac for the Steak Tartar, and am so pleased that my dining companion recommended it.  The night I dined at Balzac, I was on a mission to have scallops.  Once I settle on a food I want to eat I get stuck.   “Must have scallops, must have scallops, (repeat ad nauseam).”  Did you know:  pilgrims traveling on St. Jacks Way to the apostle's shrine at Santiago de Compostela in Spain carried a scallop shell with them, and when they would present themselves at churches, castles, and abbeys they could expect to be given as much sustenance as they could pick up with one scoop. I found them at Balzac, they were full of sustenance, and they were spectacular.  The dish, traditional Coquille St. Jacques, is on the regular menu so should always be able to find delicious scallops at Balzac.

This month Balzac is also has a special menu featuring mushrooms of all varieties.  I did not see this until it was way too late, so will return to try some mushroom raviolis, stuffed with mushrooms, in a mushroom sauce before the end of the month.  The mushroom menu is separate so be sure to ask for it before settling for the steak tartar or Coquille St. Jacques – just in case.
