I still remember Peruvian history classes from my K-7th years at FDR in Lima, but I am hard pressed to remember the names of 14 Incas. I do remember a couple: Tupac Yupanqui, Atahualpa and Mono Linco (funny names + kids = unforgettable). 14 Inkas is supposed to be a Peruvian restaurant but I am pretty sure these 14 Inkas have never visited the country, and they have most definitely not mastered the fine cuisine of the Land of Mama Huaco.
I have sampled, and will continue to sample, all the Peruvian restaurants in Bogota. There are a few exceptional ones like Matiz and Astrid y Gaston; a few which have a couple superb dishes like Mancora’s Conchitas a la Parmasana, Estampa del Chalan’s Carapulca con Cerdo, and 80 Sillas’ Ceviches; and at least one terrible one – Mi Peru. 14 Inkas creates itself a new category – mediocre.
14 Inkas has a Peruvian name and a Peruvian menu featuring Peruvian dishes. At first look, I was a little excited since the menu includes the classics like Aji de Gallina, Lomo Saltado, and of course Conchitas a la Parmasana. We ordered a few Pisco drinks and attempted to pick out a few gems from the carta. When the drinks arrived, a Maracuya and Fresa Pisco Sour and a Pisco with Lulo, my enthusiasm started to wane as they were both completely banal.
Central (right around to corner from 14 Inkas) has some of the best ceviche in town so I decided to try 14 Inkas’ tiraditos instead because if I am ever in the area looking for ceviche – Central is where I will go. I chose the Tiraditos with Maracuya and Aji which was quite tasty, and even a tad spicy, but it was not good enough to entice me back. The rest of the food that we ordered was again, completely ordinary: the Conchitas had obviously been frozen, the Lomo Saltado was tasty but average, and the Pescado a lo Macho was just fishy enough to say ‘not too fresh.’ Summary: run of the mill food, antiseptic décor, and semi-disinterested wait staff
