Throughout my delightful year here at Embassy Bogota, I have scoured our Embajada neighborhood in search of alternative lunch establishments.  To quote from Seinfeld: “Not that there’s anything wrong” with our cafeteria – I like a sandwich and fajitas as much as the other – but I simply cannot stomach chicken, and chicken is what they serve every-single-day of every-single-week.

I have found many excellent pollo-free alternatives in the ‘hood and plan an article dedicated specifically to them all, but in the meantime I would like to share a treasure I stumbled onto with the help of my soup loving amigo.  Bellini is not quite close enough to walk to but it is just a quick ride away and is well worth the short drive.  Bellini is a great place for a midday recharge with friends or a power lunch with contacts, and it’s close enough to work to ensure minimal time away from doing the people’s business.

Most of us are far too conscientious to spend much more than an hour away from work for lunch which means skip the appetizers and desserts and plow right into your one and only ‘plato principal.’  Seems you won’t be missing out on too much though as my soup loving amigo recommends you skip the Minestrone soup anyway.  The house salad was a very nice appetizer however, so if you have a slack work ethic or no conscience, feel free to order it as it is packed full of fresh greens, little mozzarella balls, a weird pickled thing, all tossed in a light vinaigrette and topped with fresh black pepper, olive oil and fresh grated parmesan cheese.

Alternatively – watch your waistline and keep focused on serving the people by just ordering one dish.  I whole-stomachly recommend the Milanesa.  This dish is the most perfect combination of extra crispy breaded steak served with a mound of fresh salad (sans mozz balls or pickled thing).  Go ahead and douse the meat with fresh lime juice, and by all means drizzle on some of the fantastically spicy oil they offer as an accoutrement.  I also recommend all the risottos, the raviolis and the steak.

Good service is not hard to find in Colombia, and neither is good food.  However, finding both so close to work is a special treat.  I am sure to include Bellini on my regular weekday ‘must eat a hot lunch that isn’t chicken’ restaurant rotation and I recommend you do the same.
