I write this review reluctantly as I am tempted to keep Cactus off the gringo radar for a bit. Alas, as I found myself at Cactus three times in one week, I figured it was only fair to share. That said, every time I have been it has been 100% Colombiano so please dine responsibly and don’t go charging in like a pack of hootin’ hollarin’ gringo yahoos. (As fun as that is to do)
Cactus is a casual place frequented by the rich and famous of Bogota society. On one visit, I stepped out to find the road chock-a-block with parked dark SUVs each with the customary driver and escolta hanging nearby. My unfortunate amigo’s driver and escolta were relegated to a spot two blocks away to wait while we enjoyed our meal.
As you can imagine from a place that caters to upper strata Bogotanos, service at Cactus is top notch. The atmosphere is super chill and welcoming with soft lighting and smooth jazz. They have plenty of seating, with two floors and a terraza, but I would still recommend making reservations, especially if you intend to lunch there with contacts during the week. The main sala is the place to be and be seen. As my soup loving amigo said as he declined the waiter’s offer of a table upstairs: “Upstairs is for los escondidos.”
Cactus’ menu is so casual that it actually doubles as a placemat. I know I recently said that the Hamburgueseria had the best burgers in town. I stand corrected - they have the 2nd best burgers in town. Cactus uses all Argentinean beef and the burgers are prepared to satisfy all appetites: ¼ pounder, ½ pounder or the mac daddy ¾ pounder. If you think the ¾ pounder is still too puny to satisfy your man-ppetite, load it up with plenty of extras on offer such as bacon (mmmm, bacon), cheese, mushrooms, and guacamole.
The burgers are scrumptious but the real treat at Cactus is the roast beef sandwich which, as Stuart McKenzie would say, is as big as a heed. Cactus serves this heaping mound of lusciously tender roast beef with a bowl of au jus so take a friend, split the beast, and dip dip dip. Still hungry? Cactus offers a plate of ribs so huge it was almost too much for four hungry chicas to share while downing plenty of delicious pisco sours.
