Although similar in concept, Juan Valdez is not the "Starbucks" of Colombia. It was founded in 2004 by The National Federation of Coffee Growers of Colombia - a nonprofit and nonpolitical cooperative that is supported by the coffee exports tax. The main objective of Juan Valdez is to improve the standard of living for Colombian coffee growers and others in each link of the productive chain. Moreover, Juan Valdez is environmentally friendly; the paper used on its cups are 100% recyclable. The stores are nicely decorated with Colombian and coffee culture ítems. You can usually find people with their laptops, groups of business people, students, friends, etc.
